You’re kidding me, right?
Honey Lemon is so important BECAUSE of the fact that she fits the ridiculous “girly-girl” stereotype: she’s bubbly, takes a lot of selfies, loves fashion and the color pink, etc.
BECAUSE YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE SHE LOVES?
Science. And explosions.
Honey Lemon is just as intelligent (possibly more) as everyone else in the team. She shows young girls that it’s okay to like fashion AND science. So many people perpetuate the idea that being a “girly girl” (which is ridiculous enough) means you can’t be smart, and that smart girls don’t waste their time with makeup and fashion. Honey Lemon defies this.
And that is why she is so vitally important.
(And then of course she’s just so sweet and happy and positive like how could you NOT love her?)
Disney was also sticking with the original Honey Lemon… She’s a Marvel character… I’m getting sick and tired of people not knowing that it’s a Marvel comic movie and just assume Disney created these characters out of thin air… The one and only reason they didn’t slap the Marvel logo onto it is because they didn’t want to bring them into the Avengers plot line…
Yeah disney did a great job at sticking to the original comic. I think shes so cute, Honey lemon aka aiko miyazaki… oh wait aiko….miyazaki…. wow her name sounds so… japanese… wait if honey lemons alter ego is japanese then why did disney make her into a white girl?
Not to stray too far but I really cant even get into debating if a characters asthetic is “too girly” when they completely white washed her and all the other characters. Big hero 6 is about a bunch of JAPANESE kids. Disney was pressed and changed a bunch of shit. Sanfran-tokyo is a joke. And the 2 kids who were kind of left asian are only half in the movie. I’m pretty sure disney gave them a white mom or something?
If the white washing of asian representation doesn’t bother you then you need to get your priorities straight.
Thank you ^^^^^^^^. Yes she’s important but she’s STILL falsely represented.
okay, so let’s break down the team.
Hiro: the leader. yes, he’s “kind of left Asian,” but do you know what that means? He’s biracial. Do you know how groundbreaking that is for some kids? There are so many kids who have two, three, even four different cultures in their life and they are often forced to only pick on when represented in media. Do you know how many times I have stared at test bubble sheets asking for my race, and me not knowing where to bubble in pacific islander, japanese, or white? so many time. “And the 2 kids who were kind of left asian are only half in the movie.” Hiro is in it WAY more than half the movie. This entire story is about him and the robot! Did you watch the movie at all?
Tadashi: Older brother of Hiro, again half Japanese, half white. Not one, but TWO, two biracial characters. He’s key in bringing Hiro to the SAN FRANSOKYO Institute of Science and Technology, where most of the team attend school. Yes, we only see him for around 18 minutes since he does in fact, die.
Gogo: Oh look another Asian! Three Asians!! Not only is she asian, she Korean! Disney has now included more Asian diversity than ever. “All asians look the same!” This is a huge issue in the Asian community. We are often clumped into one large group, which is immensely disrespectful, since most our cultures are vastly different.
Wasabi: Orginally Asian, and now black, what a shame. Way to go Disney, whitewashing a Japanese character into a BLACK character. So, he has a tall stature, broad shoulders, he’s gonna have a mean demeanor, right? He’s going to be the brawn of the team, right? Not at all. He’s probably one of the kindest characters. He’s incredibly well-organized, and also very prepared.
Fred: The only white washing I can think of that occurs within the team. But that doesn’t mean that he’s complete trash.
Honey Lemon: The most controversial character. The one thing Disney fell through on is Honey Lemon representing a Latina girl. Not so much as her appearance as a Latina, which is actually ok (don’t even try to argue this with me. I live about three miles from Tijuana and have plenty of Latina friends who have natural blonde hair and blue eyes and white skin) is the fact that she didn’t really seem Latina in anyway. So, agreed, Disney could have done a much better representation of her, but they didn’t.
AUNT Cass: Or as you called them, their “white mother.” (should I be tagging spoilers? I’m starting to feel like you didn’t even watch the movie hmmm) Again, the Hamadas are a interracial family, meaning that it’s more than possible that the two young children end up with their white Aunt. Of course, Aunt Cass could have been asian, but she isn’t. (there’s also a possibility that she could be a mixed kid herself, since a lot of mixed kids look like only one of their races. Looking at me, you would never guess I have german roots.)
tl;dr, yes Big Hero 6 change a lot of things. But was it detrimental to cultural representation? In my own opinion, no. But then again, I’m ½ Filipino, ¼ Japanese, and ¼ German, so what weight could my opinion possibly have?
Can I point out one more thing? The original Marvel comic was really racist and made as a response to the growing anime culture in Japan.
This is a picture of Honey Lemon, (aka, Aiko Miyazaki), as she appeared in the comics:
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t really think Disney was the one who originally made her look like a “white girl”.
Disney somehow managed to take a terrible and offensive comic and transform it into something new that everyone can relate to. Let’s stop comparing the two, because personally, I’d rather see the wonderfully diverse cast that Disney has brought to the big screen than any of Marvel’s source material.
